“The full ashtanga system practiced with devotion leads to freedom within one’s heart.”

 Mysore

Mysore is the traditional, individualized method for an ashtanga style yoga practice. Each individual receives personal instruction and attention to progressively move through the Ashtanga yoga sequences in a group setting. There is no prerequisite or prior knowledge of yoga needed. The intention behind this method is to help the individual learn and continue a life-long yoga practice tailored to their needs.

Ashtanga is a system of yoga that pairs breath with movement. The system is designed to build strength, increase flexibility and improve mental health among. Ashtanga translates to eight limbs. You will be practicing two of the limbs on your mat: Asana (postures) and pranayama (breathing). Every student starts with the Primary Series sequence, also known as Yoga Chikitsa which translates to yoga therapy.

The Mysore room is open from 6-8am. Each individual starts and ends their practice on their own time within the 2 hour period. The length of practice is up to you. Please enter and exit quietly to minimize disturbances for the other students.

FAQ’s and Common Courtesies

Are beginners welcome?
Yes! Beginners are encouraged to attend Mysore. You will receive individual instruction from the teacher and the assistants. It can feel like a private lesson except that others are in the room practicing. You will be asked to observe for some time during your first class. This gives you the opportunity to see how it works and get used to the setting. Part of the process is memorizing the sequence so, it is best to work slowly with a good amount of repetition. (Study aids are available)

What will I need?
Just yourself and a yoga mat if you have one. If you don’t have a mat, we can provide one. We also have various props if needed. We suggest you wear comfortable clothes to move freely. Some students like to have a towel and water. We ask that no strong smelling perfumes or oils be used in the room as it can disturb other students.

Why so early?
Many reasons make the early morning a wonderful time to practice. One, it is quiet and peaceful. Two, it sets you up for your day by helping with digestion, centering the mind and it gets the body moving. Also, it is best to practice on an empty stomach with the exception of liquids.

How often should I practice yoga?
This is a very personal question. Typically a Mysore style practice is 5-6 days a week. (Due to our modified schedule, the mysore program is Tuesday-Thursday) The answer has everything to do with your time and circumstances. The best results are seen with a regular practice of 4-6 days a week.

What is the teacher student relationship?
The yoga instructor for Mysore is your guide. The instructor teaches only the poses you are ready and able to perform. You are taught how to move for your individual body so the instructor takes into account your energy level, injuries, experience, etc. We suggest you share your aches, pains and limitations with the teacher so they can help you personalize your yoga practice. The instructor always has time for you whether it’s during the practice, or before/after. Since this is with every student, a little patience is sometimes needed. When needing help in the room, please wait and get the teachers attention. This sounds like a very personal and intimate relationship, and it can be, but know your personal space is always respected.
